TEST
OF METAL™ WEEKEND
JUNE 16, 2007
Squamish, BC

The Test of Metal (TOM) is one of the most successful
mountain bike races in North America. The 67 km. course offers leg-numbing
climbs and bone-crunching technical sections.
More than that, the TOM is an event. The town of
Squamish comes out en-masse to volunteer or cheer on the racers.
In its 12th year in Squamish, and with 800 spots available, the
Test is always a guaranteed sell out. In 2006 it sold out in a record
4 hrs and 19 minutes.
Test of Metal Inc., a not-for-profit, privately held
company, puts on TOM. Race fees are used first and foremost to put
on this extraordinarily successful race. Expenses range from event
fees and administrative costs to trail maintenance and prizing.
A large part of our budget is also reserved for the more than 300
volunteers, some of whom spend more than 12 hours working on the
race day alone. To show our appreciation, we provide each volunteer
with lunch and a TOM volley t-shirt. We also hold a volunteer party
as a celebration of their successes. Our volunteers are the heart
and soul of the event.
If the race runs a profit, those monies must be returned
to the community. Over the years the race has given in excess of
$35,000.00 back to the local Squamish community. TOM funds have
gone to SORCA, Squamish Emergency Program, Team Squamish, and the
high school mountain bike programs to name but a few. The race-director
and event committee do not receive a salary.
The race is our way of giving back to the community
and the sport that has given us years of pleasure and enjoyment.
